what is ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient modality whose origins have been traced back to more than 3,000 years ago in India. It is a preventative and curative system that advocates for using herbs, diet, and environment as tools for preventing and healing various imbalances within the body and mind.
ayurveda centers around the concept that everything - including us - is made up of 5 elements:
Air, ether, water, earth, and fire.
the three doshas
PITTA
Pitta is fire + water. It is associated with the Summer season and its qualities are hot, light, oily, liquid, and mobile.
A Pitta body-type can be described as muscular, athletic, and strong. Mentally, Pitta is determined, aggressive, assertive, strong leader, competitive, and goal-oriented.
VATA
Vata dosha is air + ether. It is associated with the Fall and Winter seasons and its qualities are dry, light, mobile, hard, rough, and spacious.
Vata body-types are often slim, energetic, and may have trouble gaining weight. Mentally, Vatas are often creative, mercurial, and tend to think outside the box.
KAPHA
Kapha is earth + water. Kapha is associated with Spring and its qualities are dense, steady, slow, heavy, cold, and soft.
Kapha body-types are strong, thicker-boned, and may be prone to weight gain. Mentally, Kapha is caring, sensitive, patient, romantic, and empathetic.
